Graphing

Mapping Notation

Before you can accurately graph any quadratic relation, you need to know the "key points."

y=x^2 is the simplest parabola.

The mapping formula is how to go from the graph y=x^2 to y=a(x-h)^2+k

(x,y)                         (x+h,  ay+k)

Steps to Graph:

1. Write the mapping formula

2. Write the table of values for y=x^2

3. Determine the key points of the new graph

4. Sketch the basic function y=x^2

5. Sketch the new graph

y=2(x+3)^2-7

(x,y)                         (x-3,  2y-7)
